After jumping through what seemed to be a million hoops, we finally were able to get a paper accepted for publication from my last Post-Doc position. I'm glad I suggested trying to publish in what I thought would be a more appropriate journal on viral genes. Even with that journal, I still had to do a couple of extra experiments to get it published.

Virus don't seem to grow for me very well in the lab. However, they seem to grow very well in me when I get sick. If only that were reversed, life would be grand.

With being completely alone this week at home, I am having the toughest time getting out of the house on time. Rachel (my dog) is part of the problem. She wants to go out every 5 minutes. I think it might be her way of coping with her favorite person (Ronzi) not being around... or she just thinks she will get more treats that way.

Tomorrow night will be my last night officially as DJ at Oasis (previously CG). Unfortunately, it is also karaoke tomorrow night. Hopefully they have a better turn out this time. After 11:00 though, I plan to play whatever I want... since it is my last night. Please come out and keep me company.

With Aarhead leaving for Paris tomorrow, he has me thinking about my own packing when I go mid-month. I know I will forget something vital like my passport. Anything else I could probably do without for four days. I hope the weather is nice while there (for both of our time there).

I bought a rip-off version of the iPod Nano that I have been playing with the last couple weeks. Originally, I just wanted an MP3 player that I could use on the plane, because I was just using my phone for an MP3 player before. Because of the price, I was like... what the heck get the one that plays video as well. I have played some video on it but didn't realize how much of the battery it would use up. I will probably limit the use of that on my trip. I am hoping I can put the new season of the Tudors on there (which starts this Sunday) for at least a couple of hours of amusement on the plane. I also bought an FM transmitter for it for my car. Because the player holds 8 GB, I figure I can have a lot more music for the car than what I can put on a CD and I won't have to change the CD all the time. The only problem, the sound quality goes down through the transmitter... like it is a radio station... who knew.

Busy
I have been crazy busy at work. So much so that it keeps me up at night thinking about it sometimes. In actuality though, I think my boss is just trying to keep me busy until we get some data back from a colleague of hers. Then I will really be busy.

So I have been sick. I don't know if it is bronchitis or pneumonia or just a bad cold that just won't go away. Last week I felt really good after having a cold for about two weeks. I took a short nap after dinner last Sunday and woke with an annoying, hacking cough… I assumed something just settled funny. The next night I was feverish and still coughing. Same with the next night but not as bad. My nose only ran when I was out in the cold so I knew it wasn't a sinus cold. Yesterday I actually felt a lot better because I went to bed early the night before (at least for me). Because I was coughing up some nasty stuff, I decided to buy an expectorant. I got the generic form of Mucinex. I didn't realize until after taking it, that I had taken a prescription strength version of it back in 2002. I remember because of how it made me feel. Very tired, lungs burn and it causes my nose to run profusely. Plus it makes my brain more slow. I really don't know how I made it through today. The Mucinex commercial makes it seem like I should be out enjoying life about now :(

I didn't know that Tahmoh Penikett (Helo from Battlestar Galactica) was going to be in "Dollhouse," the new Joss Whedon series that starts this Friday.

Because my boss is a Vet-pathologists, we get a lot of strange things sent to our lab. Today we got a cooler of dead bats.
Expense account...
For doing DNA sequencing using the campus facilities, they like DNA provided in preferred type freestanding tubes. In the handbook they give various vendors and catalog numbers. Since the handbook was printed a couple years ago, each of the vendors has discontinued offering these tubes. They list alternatives but compared to the original product price ($61/500), the alternatives are quite expensive ($194/500). I couldn't believe the markup. Because our lab doesn't have any I am thinking that previous people in our group were using cryo vials which are a lot more expensive and are not made for such small volumes and centrifuging.

I finally put together a much delayed new issue of Clubbeats on my website. Part of the reason it took me so long, not much music comes out this time of the year so there wasn't much to pick from. Plus I have been too busy with having a real job and all. Anyway, if you are interested, take a listen.

This was sent out to the subscription list from the bar...

Hello all,

Common Ground (soon to be Oasis Dance Club) will be closed for renovations from Thursday, January 1 through Monday, January 12. During this time, a new dance floor will be installed, a game room will be added, a few walls will be modified and the interior will be re-painted. We will be posting periodic renovation pictures on our website so you can see the progress in action! Common Ground will re-open for business on Tuesday, January 13.

I made turkey chili for lunch today. It came out pretty good. I decided to throw in a partial bag of mixed vegetables that contained lima beans. I hate lima beans so thought their flavor would be covered up by the seasoning. It worked as planned.

Last night was the last performance of Robin Burnett and A Band at CG. The bar was packed. Interestingly, the young students came in shortly after she was done and there seemed to be a very rapid turnover in the crowd. I figured I would be doomed to play music from the 70s and 80s all night but that did not happen. I think there has been more college students coming out this Fall semester on Saturdays than I have seen since I have been going to the bar. They even seem to enjoy club music more than the Friday night crowd which tends to only want to hear Hip Hop and Pop music. Don't get me wrong, there are still a lot of requests for Hip Hop and Pop music on Saturday nights but at least I can play some club remixes without emptying the dance floor.

Our clothes washer does not work for pillows. Now I am trying to figure out how to clean up this soggy mess. Next time I think I will just buy new pillows.

On Monday night I started to come down with something. I could tell because my sinuses were burning. Originally I thought it was because I had inhaled so much debris while mulching up all the fallen leaves in the backyard earlier in the day so didn't think too much of it. I had a really restless night of sleep that night because I seemed to have very weird (almost hallucinatory) dreams and I really couldn't get comfortable in bed. Yesterday I was achy and just felt worn down. I ended up falling asleep on the couch around 7:00 for about an hour and then I was awake until about 10. Today I have felt feverish on and off but I was still able to do my usual exercise routine without any trouble. I have heard that exercise boosts your immunity and reduces the time you have a cold, so I certainly don't want to change my usual routine there.

This afternoon, I was finally able to update my website. The hosting site changed servers or something which locked me out for about a week. I was even able to embellish descriptions on the RSS feed so that [info]fabunobo can stop complaining. I uploaded a new Flashback mix so check it out.

Her album may never be released in the USA (or at least not until next year sometime) as is typical for her. She does have a new record label so hopefully they can get her on the airwaves more than her old one. It almost sounds like she is getting back to the style she started with. Enjoy...

I finally got over being pissed off about revising a paper for my old boss but quickly realized I don't have a document I can edit. All I have is a pdf file which if it were an editable file I guess would be okay, but it isn't. I guess it will have to wait another day or until my old boss can get me a different file. I think he is in Australia so that might take longer to do than even I expect.
